2019 City Planning Summer Institute
In Summer of 2019, the CPI ran 3 programs in Newark, NJ and Paterson, NJ.

The Center for Community Planning partnered with the City of Newark Department of Sustainability, the Newark Summer Youth Employment Program, and New Jersey Community Capital to employ 20 Newark High School students to do real city planning work in real time with real city planners in the field. Students surveyed just under 2,000 individual parcels in Newark's West Ward, providing valuable infomration to the City's efforts to rehabilitate delapitated properties in negihborhoods. The students also spoke to community residents and received city planning training in order to create a full scale redevelopment proposal for a student centered corridor on South Orange Avenue  that would include a recreation center, a sustainable garden, a farm to table cafe, and a students center. The Center for Community Planning partnered with Paterson and Passaic Public Schools, the City of Passaic, the City of Paterson and New Jersey Community Development Corporation to provide City Planning training to students at Passaic County Community College. Students conducted community surveys to inform their ideas for Paterson's Downtown neighborhood. They proposed Paterson's first "Smart and Green" pedestrian plaza thaht would include a Jr. Hamilton Social Club, a book store with outdoor seating space, a gift shop honoring the history of Paterson, and an app that would allow people to participate in self guided tours throghout the city.
